Laura Witzleben in her own words.
“To be in a studio and either create or dance myself with people I want to be with.”
The work is me and I am the work because my body and mind is the work itself.
“It requires a very strong mind and body and an insane amount of work and passion and luck to make it out here.
I find dance to be the hardest profession one can choose. You have to keep at it every single day.”
“Maybe I like that the most and also dislike that the most. As a dancer you agree to work a lot for very little money. The people that are working are the lucky ones. […]”
Laura Witzleben in our words.
Laura Witzleben’s idea of happiness is undoubtedly anchored in freedom, altruism and most importantly: dancing. Forever if she could.
For the past two years, Laura has been freelancing, following “a very conscious decision I made in 2016 looking at my life and thinking about in which direction I want to continue professionally”.
Performances of her own creation including Don’t Smoke Under Water (premiered in 2014, award-winning) or November (2018) are vibrant, graceful and particularly mesmerizing. She displays a smart choice of music: sometimes joyful, often eerie, always powerful. Her dynamic movements paired with a frequent change of rhythm results in hypnotizing performances that captivate the audience.
Laura carries on creating pieces, and envisions a new initiative, “The Power Project”, a full-length evening collaboration involving a theater company, centered on portraying the power relationships in our society that shape people’s lives.
Born and raised in Berlin, Laura Witzleben studied at the Bertha von Suttner high school in the German capital, and then went on carrying on her studies with a four-year study program Bachelor of Dance at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Arnhem, Netherlands.
Laura has performed in many places throughout the world, mainly in Europe including Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Philippines, Norway, France, Sweden, Lithuania, Hungary… to name a few. She has worked with great names in the dance world, including Malou Airaudo, Pina Bausch at the Academia di Roma, Samuel Mathieu, and Ismael Ivo.
