The subtlety of awareness transforms how we perform and experience movement. I find ways to push my limits and finding ease of a soft body while connecting to space, self, and other, a practice of witnessing and relating all those connections.

The play of tension and ease, and sensuality. Solving problems in real time. What is available – creating with what emerges within a structured, responsive and a spacious present.

I do not go out of my way to hide my ugly. I have a range of self, loving to submerge myself in the elements, rolling on the ground, experiencing the animal of my female body – submitting to a regal grotesqueness, human and energetic. Granting impulses, tonality, emergence, interaction with the texture of raw elements, weaving chaos with a belief in the power of simplicity.

Imagine for a moment an unapologetically quirky, curious, and adventurous woman with a never-ending drive to create and perform.

That is, without a doubt, Natalie Deryn Johnson.

Everything about Natalie is one-in-a-million: her boundless creativity, devotion to magic, and remarkable presence.

In NPAFE’s most beloved work, phased (un)fazed, Natalie utilized her brilliant mind in tandem with her dancing body and voice to create an improvisational piece representing the compassionate correlations between poetry and human connection.

Premiering at the So-fi Festival in 2019, phased (un)fazed is the best example of Natalie’s unmatched creativity. Just 50 minutes long, this innovative form of storytelling exudes integrity, using multi-media and metadance techniques. Through this piece in particular, Natalie demonstrates her unmatched desire for creation and the ability to remain fluid in an increasingly rigid world.
New York City and the world have long benefited from Natalie’s work. She was presented with a Scholastic National Gold Key in Photography and was recently featured as a dance model in the celebrated Lois Greenfield’s publication, Moving Still.

With a big heart to match her big dreams, Natalie has much more to accomplish. She continues to explore the relationships between energy and self, creation and compassion, storytelling and magic to express her love for the simplicity and dynamism of the human heart.
