Sofia Bengoa and Valentina Guedez Delgado in their own words…
Grateful for this city that keeps me in constant motion; meeting, growing and dancing with people from all walks of life who dream about dance just as much as I do – Sofia Bengoa
…
People say how good dance feels all the time but I disagree, dance doesn’t always feel good, sometimes you tap into this part of you that you are so scared to share or even get to know or understand and while that’s beautiful in its own way it’s also terrifying. – Valentina Guedez Delgado
…
Café Con Rumba feels like a dream. It was beyond anything I could have imagined and I am forever grateful for the love and support we received. Seeing so many Latin American people and friends come together, singing and dancing and vibing to music in the language I grew up speaking makes me so emotional. – Sofia Bengoa
Sofia Bengoa and Valentina Guedez Delgado in NPAFE’s words…
…Embrace the journey! This is a story of how and why NPAFE sees so much potential and tenacity in two fascinating New York City-based dance artists, Sofia Bengoa and Valentina Guedez Delgado, and in their true entrepreneurial “Cafe Con Rumba” dance performance series.
…Truth be told, when the NPAFE team first met them towards the end of 2023, we did not fully realize how professionally driven and dance-dedicated Bengoa and Guedez Delgado really were. And are. It was only after our visit to the Big Apple to see Katie Drablos-Miriam Ali “Gateway” benefit concert in December, in which Guedez Delgado played a creative role, that we sensed there was a lot more to learn about them…and to value.
…Originally from Ecuador and raised in Miami, Sofia Bengoa is a Public Health research scholar who, armed with an undergraduate degree from Brown University, is currently pursuing her Epidemiology PhD at the CUNY School of Public Health & Policy. Couple that with her true passion for dance and her tenacious drive to marry contemporary dance with the richness of her Hispanic heritage, and we are talking about an impressive imagineer of adventure in choreography and creativity in dance.
…Valentina Guedez Delgado, herself originally from Venezuela, moved to the United States in 2013 and started dancing only in her high school sophomore year. She hasn’t stopped since. Earning her Associate of Arts in Dance degree from Miami Dade College, Guedez Delgado followed her dreams, moved to New York City, performed in works including Anthology 33, JCE Jazz Dance Project, Night of Life, “Almost 36” by Katie Drablos, and today is chosen time and time again by choreographers creating new works in various styles.
…Bengoa and Guedez Delgado crossed paths in dance class during the summer of 2021 and realized that they share a common interest in promoting Hispanic culture and voice through dance and music. Their shared passion led to the creation of Café con Rumba, a space for Hispanic choreographers based in New York City to dive into their roots through music and movement as a celebration of their rich Hispanic cultural heritage.
…The first Cafe con Rumba, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, took place at Arts on Site on September 14, 2023. Eleven choreographers, including Bengoa and Guedez Delgado, presented eye-popping dance works. Participants and audience members alike delved into the rich tapestry of Latin American melodies and movement, experiencing an artistic fusion of music, dance, culture, and movement. This celebration offered a sanctuary for choreographers to showcase their work without constraints, inviting audience members to immerse themselves in a world shaped by Hispanic heritage, experience, and ancestry.
…The bottom line? Few can equal and none can surpass the talent, inner drive and unending spirit that Bengoa and Guedez Delgado have for sharing their full-of-imagination dance creativity with their audiences.
…So watch their schedule and be sure to attend the next Café con Rumba event! You will see for yourself why the NPAFE team are confident these two compelling artists will succeed on their fascinating journey of creating and presenting dance in a brilliant style all their own.
