Emily Schoen Branch in her own words…
…
Dance is the sacred work of artists, the vehicle for commenting on society, for laughing at ourselves, for expressing anger, and as a place to create and appreciate beauty and awe just for the sake of it.
…
I want dancers to feel brilliant and transcendental, while maintaining the authenticity of their everyday selves. I want the audience to see themselves in the humans on stage, and to feel moments of joy and reflection.
…
Again and again, dance teaches me that when the filters fall away between people—when the boundaries of geography, religion and politics soften—the beginning and end of our relationships is always human.
Emily Schoen Branch in NPAFE’s words…
Color. Action. Lots of action. An arm moves. Faces close to one another. Closer still. Bodies and minds touch. And not only those of the performers: audience and actors reach to one another. And then they touch as if by magic.
Such is the skillful artistry of Emily Schoen Branch, accomplished choreographer and dancer whose unmistakable success presenting live performances and filming modern dance in the rough-and-tumble competitive world of New York City has now become the stepping-stone for her to launch new works in her now home city of Seattle.
It takes only one look at Branch’s website and her “Ten Tiny Dances” video shorts on Vimeo to realize that within her mind there lies a tenacious drive not only to create but also to dazzle. The depth and breadth of her choreographic originality is enormous. And compelling.
How one mind can conceptualize such variety of style, color and stage presence is a mystery and should remain so. Few know as she does how, when and where the camera must be, and where the post-editing must assemble so many parts into such satisfying wholes. Immersive for sure. Absorbing? Yes. And addictive.
All this said, what we most respect and admire about Emily Branch is her polish and sophistication, so apparent in her creative decisions in choosing how to transform her inner sentiment and sensuality into lasting moments that audiences savor. Whenever you seek out her performances on line, yours will be time very well spent.
