Joan Dwiartanto in her own words…
…
When it comes to dance films, the experience lives on.
The way you wanted that experience stays the same—and I think that’s beautiful!
Joan Dwiartanto in NPAFE’s words…
…
It was clear to us right away when we first came upon Joan Dwiartanto’s “Crying On The Island They Own” filmwork that here was someone that warranted our putting other things aside and make the time to find out more about her.
Good thing we did.
For in this young designer of dance and filmmaking lies a creative mind of extraordinary power, coupled with an unmistakable determination to succeed both artistically and commercially.
“Surprise” might well be Dwiartanto’s middle name. Even the correct pronunciation of her first name is a surprise: Jo-Ann. That’s just a hint of what really lies in her already comprehensive library of dance, choreography, and filmmaking, so remarkably presented in her Instagram and website (links below),
Dwiartanto’s skills in immersing her audiences lie in wrapping compelling artistry with a sixth sense for collaborating with the right people at the right place and right time to present the right stuff. Her creative focus can be sensed in the very first video reel she ever made (below). The production quality is second to none, as is the immersiveness of the story that viewers are primed to imagine. It’s all there.
Dwiartanto’s website shows more: a keen eye not only to see the world through a refined lens of intense academic study, self-driven experimentation, and production experience, bound together to capture hypnotic moments of movement in stills and video.
All that said, it would be wrong to assume that photography and filmmaking are the key components of the professional future that Dwiartanto intends to chart. She is a multi-hyphenate artist working as a dancer and filmmaker, having graduated from The Juilliard School in 2022 where she was awarded the Juilliard Career Advancement Fellowship.
Her cv shows so much more (link below): how this remarkable person from Singapore has been and is driven to achieve artwork of pure individuality. There’s no question but that she has a passion for storytelling through movement that will soon have her globally known as a multi-faceted artist in dance and film.
