Kristalyn Gill in her own words…
…
My artistic legacy serves to bring the audience’s attention into the gray spaces of human experience, to stir and steward conversations between communities that may have otherwise never crossed-paths.
I seek to build creative spaces chock full of athletic storytelling, zealous risk-taking, and daring honesty.
Dance is the physical prose of our lives, whether it`s a story or an idea that we are expanding on, it has immense power to connect communities and create respect and trust across diverse beliefs and perspectives.
Kristalyn Gill in NPAFE’s words…
…Dancer, choreographer, author, educator… it’s hard to believe that all these words describe the same person: Kristalyn Gill.
…When photographer and film maker Grace Copeland told us about her friend Kristalyn, we immediately wanted to meet her. And we weren’t disappointed. Performing for Yue Yin Dance Company, Soul Project Dance Company, and SHINSA the Collective, she has acquired a style all her own, which she has developed in particular through her interdisciplinary exploration across movement genres (contemporary, jazz, house, hip hop) and performance mediums (acting, writing, dancing).
…“LOOK AT ME” is a perfect example of her talent. Using both a motion camera and a steady camera, Kristalyn impresses us with the quality and precision of her work. Whether in the choreography, the script or the set design, nothing is left to chance, and her attention to detail enables her to offer us a top-notch interactive exhibition.
…Beyond technique, this truly talented NYC-based artist has something to SAY. Her “LOOK AT ME” exhibition and digital capture of the performance via film “explores the human urge to be seen and understood”. If we’ve come to understand anything about Kristalyn, it’s her need to communicate and share her vision of our world and society. Highly expressive, she oscillates between dancer and actress to convey messages and emotions. Her entire body is animated, right down to her face, which dances and gives Kristalyn that charismatic, singular style.
…But dance is not her only means of inviting us to question the world. In creating Dive and Dine, she offered the opportunity for open discussion on over 150 topics ranging from identity to mental health. She definitely has a gift for bringing people together, both through dance and by creating a real community of thought. Sharing is what her work is all about.
… Sharing dance, sharing thoughts, but also sharing her religion. Indeed, Kristalyn Gill has many strings to her bow, and she also uses poetry (in addition to the performing arts) to further expound upon her thoughts about religion.
…In her book Purification in Queens coming Fall 2024, she examines femininity and faith, her writing becoming a “transparent and honest manifesto of the complexities of living in a body”. In particular, she aspires to cultivate a space dedicated to an open conversation about faith within the creative community.
…This recurring motif can be seen through her dance film “The Main Ingredient of a Ghost” in which she questions the ecclesiastical hierarchy of the Christian Church through the use of religious places, gestures and signs.
