Lisa Bless in her own words…
…
For me dance is its own language, a language of poetry and movement and movement is life. It has the power to express the things that can’t be put into words… It speaks directly to us, our hearts, our subconscious.
…
With my work I want to address our deepest concerns as human beings. Fears, hopes and dreams. Starting from a place I know and moving into the unknown, I like to work intuitively and flow with the transformation of the creative process.
…
Dance for me has the power to cross borders. It can speak to people of all kinds of backgrounds. It is universal and a language that does not need translation or an academic degree.
Lisa Bless in NPAFE’s words…
…It is impossible not to be carried away by the energy, sensitivity and conviction of Lisa Bless.
…A dancer, choreographer, and multidisciplinary artist from Heidelberg, Germany, this ambitious artist ingeniously explores different forms of expression such as dance, performance, video mapping, voice…all to create innovative and thought-provoking works.
…Whether live or with film, Bless creates movement that takes audiences to new places, allowing them to look and feel way beyond the bounds of normality. Hers are immersive experiences that allow you to quickly escape from reality and then emerge from the experience with your imagination all fired up.
…Without question, Bless is a performance art creative force full of conviction. Experiencing her emotive instincts, you cannot but open yourself to subjects that fascinate this artist but – every now and then – also revolt her, not the least of which is how humankind can do such harm to the environment.
…This is especially the case in her recording of a post-apocalyptic world in her immersive film “Oxy-Gen”. Co-conceiving this epic chronicle initially during the pandemic in Germany and India with her colleague-in-arts Pankaj Sihag, Bless and Sihag then worked independently on the two continents to film a most unusual performance: Oxy-Gen emotively explores the possibility of a post-apocalyptic future, a dystopian world where breathable air is becoming increasingly scarce and people everywhere struggle with survival, loneliness, and isolation.
…A compelling video work, Oxy-Gen skillfully captures issues that today are top-mind in political and social debates all around the world. Building on Oxy-Gen, Bless and Sihag are now co-creating their new work “Embers”, a two-part sci-fi dance performance to be presented in Prague and other cities.
…Fusing contemporary dance, physical theater and kathak, they will be presenting two radically different climate scenarios in a not-so-distant future, staged to profoundly impact people’s physicality, behavior, and emotional states.
…World 1 is a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world where humanity fails to change human behavior and planet earth is damaged beyond repair. World 2 is about hope and transformation, where society has found its way to a better world in which people live harmoniously with nature and their fellow human beings.
…Such is the entrancing world of Lisa Bless and her creativity, tenacity and drive. See more of it below.
