Using the power of dance to take audiences well beyond the commonplace.
Strong. Evocative. Articulate in movement of mind and body. Expressive beyond boundaries.
Unstoppable drive to draw people into the magic of dance. And the genius to make it happen every time.
Maddie Burnett in her own words…
Art that starts from the soul has the power to touch audience members from deep within, bridging emotion to human creation and culture.
…
Dance honours diversity in the most human of ways. It provokes critical thinking, encouraging audiences to be progressive thinkers and problem solvers.
…
I dance to reflect beauty in the world around me. And more: to counter the ugliness in society that still needs so much change, and to advance the art of dance by keeping it relevant to today’s audience.
Maddy Burnett in NPAFE’s words…
…Passionate about dance and dance performance. That’s Maddie Burnett. Acknowledged nationally and internationally for the energy, elegance and sensuality of her convincing dance expressiveness whether live on stage or digitally. That too is Maddie Burnett.
…By her presence in New York City with that hard-to get O1-B visa in hand confirming to all comers the brilliance of her artistry, that too is Maddie Burnett, a Vancouver native representing the very choreographic and dance excellence that defines how and why the Big Apple attracts the very best from all over the world.
…For those who are lucky enough to see Burnett in a live performance, sometimes in her own productions and oftentimes as a standing member of New York’s remarkable Alison Cook Beatty Dance, it’s self-evident right away that her intensity of movement is wholly magnetic, raw and powerful when the choreography demands it, gracefully fluid and precise when that is the choreographic order of the day.
…One cannot help but be enraptured by every moment of Burnett’s choreographed movement, whether hers or others’, just as we ourselves were, for example, when among a very lucky audience we were drawn into her riveting “In Spite of, Because of… The Wallpaper” performance choreographed by Cook-Beatty that was being presented as part of Cook-Beatty’s 30 March 2024 quintuple bill at New Your City’s City Center. Oh WOW!
…Audiences readily see Burnett’s compelling dance originality and authenticity no matter in what way she takes on and conquers 21st century contemporary dance. She simply shines, and shines brightly. Her inner fire literally lights up the place no matter what the form of dance might be, but especially when she is “dancing for a cause”, as Burnett herself puts it.
…Dancing for a cause will certainly be the case, for instance, in her planned 2025 iDance Ministry Bahamas project that will focus on spreading awareness of various mental health issues, one that she will be bringing to juvenile detention centers as well as to the broader community. “It aligns with my own artistic mission of using dance as a means of bringing communities together,” she explains, “spreading awareness of globally important topics and educating audiences of all ages and demographics.”
…The fascinating documentary that you discover in her Instagram, the story of where Burnett has come from and what she has achieved in her impressive career as creator, choreographer and dancer, goes a long way to explain how and why she proclaims: “At this point in my life, I want to perform. I simply love performing.”
…And can she ever. One sees it, for example, in her remarkable “Solitude” immersive video, produced during the pandemic, where the superior quality of her own choreography and performance plus filming and high-class editing has everyone believing that they are watching a high-end professional video shoot.
…When you do watch “Solitude”, which you’ll find in the video collection further down the page, ask yourself whether this Hollywood-quality digital production could ever have been shot with an iPhone. By the dancer herself. Or edited by the dancer with iMovie. On all three counts, the astonishing answer is yes. Watch it and see for yourself what innate brilliance is all about.
…And this from her 8 March 2024 Instagram: “So much can happen in a year… Just like this piece, life is a rollercoaster of events and emotions! I am so grateful to be where I am now, grounded by the people and the art who make the biggest storms worth fighting.” The “this piece” Burnett is referring to? “Song Of Thunder”, one of her favorite choreographic originals by Cook-Beatty, performed by Burnett in stunningly perfect visual and physical movement together with Madeline Kuhlke, and captured expertly in video editing by Burnett herself whose eye for mastering the right technology to create video beauty you’ll see below in the actual video.
…The bottom line for Maddie Burnett? An impassioned love of dance. Unquestioned success in achieving dance excellence, coupled with that rare skill to immerse audiences in the dynamism of her lithe movement. This and so much more defines this quite remarkable artist who is this gift to us from Vancouver, a strong, sophisticated performing artist of dance who you want to follow, watch her videos here and on Instagram, and grab every ticket you can to her live appearances no matter where they might be.
