Naveen Tan
An engineer by profession, who used his entrepreneurial strength to become
a FILMMAKER!
Naveen Tan in his own words…
I have always been fascinated by the beauty and complexity of dance. Dance is a true form of art that allows for self expression in physical movement and is also a universal language that transcend barriers. All of our emotions can be expressed through dance and also tremendous feats of physical ability can be achieved through dance. Dance can be simple but yet so complex.
…
Being able to capture movements, expression and meaning and to be able to present it to an audience is priceless. It is my ultimate goal to convey a deeper message and provide an immersive experience so that the audience can experience the film and not just merely watch it.
…
The essence of achieving anything of worth is team work. One can only go so far relying solely on oneself in this world. For any endeavor we undertake, it is always only with team work that we can achieve the next level and tremendous success.
Naveen Tan in NPAFE’s words…
An independent filmmaker based out of Houston, TX. Naveen Tan was born and raised in Malaysia, and went to college of Engineering in West Virginia. Moving to Houston in 2013 after being assigned to Siberia, Russia for 3 years, he has been based in Texas ever since. Professionally, Naveen has worked in the oil and gas industry for more than 18 years…
…and has no prior training in filmmaking!
Nevertheless, with his passion for filmmaking, Naveen has learned this special art on his own, without any formal or informal training in filmmaking. Everything he has created is the result of self-teaching, with help from the local community.
“It has definitely been a great journey especially coming from a non-filmmaking background,” says Naveen.
As a first time filmmaker, Naveen has learnt a tremendous amount from his latest film project, the short dance film “FEAR”, directed by himself and Gemini Davis. He was collaborating with a great team who each brought valuable insights to different aspects of the short film.
Naveen believes that he has been fortunate enough to be part of a very robust and sharing cinematography community in Houston. What’s more, he is extremely thankful to his family for supporting him throughout his creative journey.
Setting out with an extremely limited budget, Naveen went out and networked with like minded folks. He managed to get a group of excellent talent to come together for his big “FEAR” project. “It has truly been a deep collaboration between us all.”
Telling a story for the “ordinary” audience (not performing artists) is not that easy, but Naveen has succeeded in doing it. And so, he decided to get his short film “FEAR” publicly admired. He was amongst one of the winners at the AAlcehmy`s “Give Me A Break!” Film Festival, which took place on September 27, 2022 in New York City. No wonder that Naveen loved working on his project! With such professional artists, with his desire to admire dance and film it, he is an absolutely talented director and filmmaker.
