Eager to Bring Dance to Various Communities By Teaching and Sharing Her Knowledge .
Sophie Quay in her own words…
I am interested in the dividing lines we’ve constructed between movement genres and where we can diffuse the boundaries. My ultimate goal within my dancing is to express. To express a word, a feeling, a moment or memory, an abstraction, a sensation, an idea.
…
To me, it’s not just about the dancing. It’s also about connection, kindness, respect, being open minded, dynamic and playful in any creation process. That’s where true creativity thrives.
…
Movement has always felt like another language I hold innate to my being. Whenever I hear music I can’t help it, I just begin moving or choreographing in my head as if this urge just has to come out somehow.
Sophie Quay in NPAFE’s words…
…There aren’t many dance artists in the world of performing arts who from the very first meeting show such nonstop energy, positivity, open mindedness, and willingness to make new connections as does Sophie Quay. We realized this right away when NPAFE first met with her early in 2024 at the recommendation of Jamiel Devernay-Laurence, himself among the UK’s leading dance industry producers intent on growing the audience for ballet and contemporary dance.
…It became clear to us right away in our first meeting why Devernay-Laurence speaks so highly of Quay. Her passion extends not only to her personal artistic journey but also to driving positive change for the future of dance. Sophie was one of those kids who did gymnastics from a young age and switched to dance at the age of 9. She believes she turned to dance as an outlet for creative expression and artistry. Originally from Sydney, Australia, she moved to London in 2022, has been based there ever since, and has succeeded there in making a name for herself as few others have.
…Indeed. Since 2021, Sophie Quay has been choreographing and participating in a whole host of dance films and music videos. What’s more, she has been chosen as dancer for stage, street theater, digital works with renowned choreographers. A highlight moment in Quay`s career was being part of the performance in the Saudi Arabia Opening Games ceremony in 2023.
…At her core, Sophie Quay identifies as a contemporary dancer however her movement, training and the career opportunities she’s had reflect an impressive versatility to embody a variety of styles; hip hop, jazz, commercial, ballet, African contemporary dance and freestyle being in her repertoire. Sophie doesn’t want to be defined by one style of dance, she believes all are unique forms of expression and she strives for her career to reflect the versatility she offers to the dance industry.
…Quay`s skills tell a lot about her thoughtful, energetic, and multidisciplinary personality. Along with dance, Sophie is experienced in children’s theatre, immersive and interactive performances, musical theatre, outdoor performances, and poetry! Additionally, she lives for an adventure and immersing herself in the outdoors. She is an avid hiker, having completed the Larapinta trail in Northern Territory, Australia in just 16 days, famous for its rugged terrain and mountain climbs. She considers her family’s camper trailer a ‘second home’ having spent up to 9 months in total camping through remote regions of Australia as a child. Having grown up by the water she also loves to swim and kayak as well as ski and practice yoga and pilates.
…You may wonder: what are Quay’s goals for the next few years? She would very much love to continue dancing, to become a member of a dance company and work alongside accomplished choreographers, bringing dance to a wide range of audiences. Importantly, she wants to share her knowledge of dance with others. She hopes to work with communities around the world, bringing to non-dancers and those without access to dance training, the knowledge of how to express themselves through movement and music.
…The bottom line? NPAFE loves Sophie Quay! There’s unending magic in every moment of her artistic voice and performance. Simply being in the same room with her, feeling her energy, listening to her words and watching her move … what a total treat!
